League and players union need to address rookie salaries

There is no doubt that in the collective bargaining talks between the NFL and the players union, that developing a rookie wage scale will be an important topic. This has to be changed, for the overall good of the game. It's not healthy to have players who haven't set foot on an NFL field to be the highest paid players on your roster.

So while Sam Bradford gets 50 million dollars in guaranteed dough, Tom Brady is in negotiations to get a new contract that probably won't even come close to that. Anyone else see a problem with that?

What it does is punish teams drafting in the top ten, because unless you get a superstar, they aren't ever going to be able to justify their contract. Thats why when a team at the bottom of the first round gets a player such as Percy Harvin, who is top 5 talent at a reduced price, they benefit greatly. And then you have teams like the Raiders who made Jamarcus Russell the highest paid player on their team, if they wouldnt have taken him, some other team would have right away.

I'm positive that the day and age of NFL rookies getting massive deals are in the rearview mirror, and the league will be better for it in the long run.

  1. The biggest loser in Bradford's contract is not the Rams, but the #1 overall pick in next years draft!
